about
Potholes is about the bittersweetness of finally calling it, about the things and people that get left behind. There is deep sadness and tragedy in that, but also a hopeful sense of forward motion. There is something necessary and healthy in saying goodbye to the younger versions of ourselves, old friends or the partner we fell in love with; saying goodbye to the struggles and joys that come with each new phase of life. It felt like an important answer to Feet Are Dirty, I Went Down, and Standby, which are all about feeling stuck, yearning for the past, future, movement of any kind. It felt like a necessary song to follow Burn the Boxes, a moment of homage to the sadness and renewal of truly moving on.
It was one of the last things we recorded at Chase Park for the record. I sat down with our friend JoJo Glidewell to teach him the chords so he could come up with a more complex piano part. He insisted that he liked the simplicity of the original demo piano but agreed to add in some little thoughts here and there. We ended up with a stripped-down piano duet, opting to leave in the squeak of the piano seat and low-fi vocals. -Amelia
lyrics
Potholes
I looked up and I saw you waving
You were giving blood for some hurricane
I remember when you dropped your hoodie
We were running redlights to escape the day
Growing old is just like coffee
It stains the carpet and my teeth
I won’t be sad when I wake tomorrow
And see you took my favorite mug
And here we are Thursdays
Dropping our masks off
Looking for potholes to swim inside
Maybe we’ve gone far enough
Maybe it’s time to say goodbye
I looked up and down the hallway
You were stumbling home from an empty room
I took the car keys from the table
Packed the guitar and the broom
Cause you were running, and I was running
It just so happened we’d gone the same way
Cause that cup’s gonna break again
And this time it’ll stay that way
And here we are Thursday
Dropping our masks off
Looking for potholes to swim inside
Maybe we’ve gone far enough
Maybe it’s time to say goodbye
