about

This song was written while my now-husband and I were living with my parents in St. Paul, MN, filming a movie he’d written about a little boy that finds what appears to be a dead Santa Claus. We had turned my parents’ urban garage into a pen for two goats that factored into the movie somehow. It was a cold, snowless, winter, and it was becoming clear that we couldn’t finish the film. We decided to head back down south to Tennessee, get married, and start our own life in warmer waters. Mule is about that homecoming. -Amelia

lyrics

Mule

That mule is full of piss and sin and fire
Kicking out Saturdays like glass
I sit and watch the river rising
Kicking out soil and brush and grass

I’ve got crows up in my bedroom
There are sparrows in my tea
As I run away the cock calls
Three more times he answers me

Saying take me back down to the southland
Where minds are slow as feet are fast
We will know home when we find it
We will stay if the feeling lasts

I am not afraid of fighting
In some town that I don’t know
As long as that mule’s in my corner
As long as everybody knows

So take the cows back out to pasture
Throw them goats back in the sea
As I run away the cock calls
Three more times he answers me

Saying take me back down to the southland
Where we grow old but forget the past
We will know home when we find it
We will stay if the feeling lasts
Let the feeling last
