about

I wrote this song at the beginning of a relationship, and it began as a sort of “define the terms” contract. While the song was still in beta phase, George Floyd was murdered in our hometown and the protests bloomed all over the country. The idea of burning down “boxes” and institutions became a more meta concept, that in both our personal lives and in society as a whole we felt a need to burn some structures down to be able to choose how we want to live differently. -Rachel

lyrics

Burn the Boxes

I don’t wanna be your factory outlet
I don’t wanna drink your watery beer
I will go with you to Florida
But your mother’s staying here

Let’s get drunk at the Orlando airport
I’ll play your game but it’s my deal
You can stand to watch the sunset
But I’m gonna kneel

Who am I, who am I, who am I to say I’m wrong
Who am I, who am I, who am I to cut you down
All I know is that the answer is much bigger found

Burn the boxes, burn the boxes burn the boxes, burn ‘em down
Burn the boxes, burn the boxes burn the boxes, let ‘em drown

It’s time to join a band of outlaws
Four-wheel drive across this swampy town
When we go let's stick together
We’ll burn the beaches down

Who am I, who am I, who am I to say I’m wrong
Who am I, who am I, who am I to cut you down
All I know is that the answer is much bigger found

Burn the boxes, burn the boxes burn the boxes, burn ‘em down
Burn the boxes, burn the boxes burn the boxes, let ‘em drown
