about

I wrote this song mid-binge on Dolly Parton’s America podcast. I was out walking my dog, listening to the episode where Dolly talks about the importance of first lines and her song, A Gamble Either Way. I came up with the first few lines on the walk and then had to work my way back through the rubble of old relationships to figure out what they might mean. -Amelia

lyrics

Born in a Ditch

Baby I was born in a ditch
Chasing after something that I couldn’t itch
Swimming around in dirty water
Looking for the pieces that I couldn’t fix

Baby you were born long before
Rainy day in August on a kitchen floor
Emptying the bank
Filling half a tank
Giving just a little always taking more

Ooh (you run away)
I’m gonna keep a light on
Ooh (someday you’ll stay)
I’m gonna keep a light on

Fell for the drummer in a band
Rolling in the styrofoam
Biloxi sand
Some of the time I want you
Mostly though you’re running show with slight of hand

Ooh (you run away)
I’m gonna keep a light on
Ooh (someday you’ll stay)
I’m gonna keep a light on

Keep coming back to baby Gene
Shoes shined in the trumpet line of St. Augustine
I can’t even fault you
For all the ghosts that haunt you
You dance to keep from dying down in New Orleans
Ooh (you run away)
I’m gonna keep a light on
Ooh (someday you’ll stay)
I’m gonna keep a light on

You found the door
You found the door
You found it
Yeah
We’re swimming for
That open shore
Yeah we’re drowning

You found the door
You found the door
You found it
Yeah
You know the score
Of this tired war
Yeah we’re drowning
